8th grade students have been discussing the art form that combines literature and illustration - blackout poetry. Blackout poems can be created using the pages of old books or even articles cut from yesterday’s newspaper. Using the pages of an existing text, blackout poets isolate then piece together single words or short phrases from these texts to create lyrical masterpieces. We discussed themes such as appropriation vs. plagiarism, censorship and imagery. Students are very excited to use pages from the banned book that they are currently reading in english class, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and by seeking inspiration from artists such as Austin Kleon, Tom Phillips, and Sue Olsen, to create their own piece!
