Our 6th grade students spent time researching the role of masks within several cultures throughout history. They specifically compared and contrasted Ancient Egyptian funerary masks, African ceremonial masks and Greek theater masks. Students also discussed masks within contemporary art, as well as the similarities and differences within their work. Artists Peggy Bjerkan, Kimmy Cantrell and Andrew Lonnquist were three that stood out! Students will be discussing major themes that can be explored within their mask while completing their thumbnail sketches. We are excited to begin creating our original ceramic masks!
